Tubex® Tree Shelters

Tree shelters are nothing new.  I modified this technology back in early 1990’s for small Paulownia seedlings.  I introduced this idea to Dr. Jeffrey W. Stringer, who, in turn, did a study.  It was published in the American Paulownia Association News Letter Vol. 5  No.1  January 1996.

Excerpt from that study

“Tree shelters can be an aid in successfully establishing small containerized Paulownia seedling.  Research results outlined below showed that one foot tree shelters significantly improved initial survival and growth of float tray seedlings on an alluvial bottom site, a hardwood seedling nursery bed site, and 3 surface mine sites in eastern Kentucky.

Float tray seedlings are relatively inexpensive to produce and are also easy to transport and plant relative to conventional containerized stock.  However, due to their relatively small size, some type more

*Key Points To Remember*

Keep the shelter between the height of 8” to 1 foot.  If shorter, there is not enough protection.  If longer, not enough sunlight & the tree is weak & spindly.

●Let the tree grow out of the shelter.  It should be 2/3 of th eway down into the shelter, when planed.

●The bottom should be push into the soil deep enough (0.5 to1.0 inches) to secure the shelter from wind and seal off any air flow from the bottom.

●When seal at the bottom, the shelters  to act as a minitrure greenhouse and prevents frost from falling onto the tree.  I have planted up to 8 weeks before our June 15 last frost date!

●The shelters will protect the seedlings from predation of rabbits and insects

●The shelters will protect the seedlings during the weeding methods, i.e.  Weed eaters & chemicials

●The shelters will greatly reduce wartering nedds in the critial first few weeks!
